The bishop of Tartu with a sergeant. From the 14th century onwards, the Setumaa region was a borderland between the princes of Pskov and the bishops of Tartu (German Dorpat). Setumaa thus lay at the interface between western and eastern Christianity. To defend the area, the princes of Pskov built the castle of Isborsk, the bishops of Tartu the fortress of Vastseliina.
