The Sherman Firefly (Leuchtkäfer) was an Allied battle tank whose development can be understood as a reaction to the increasing technical dominance of German armoured fighting vehicles - especially by the PzKpfW VI Tiger (Sd.Kfz. 181). Based on the design of the US M4 Sherman, the installation of the QF 17-pounder anti-tank gun led to a British model variant with high combat power. And although developed in a roundabout way or without official approval, the 17-pdr made the Sherman Firefly an effective main battle tank on the Western European theatre of war. - Wikipedia -
