Henry VIII Tudor, born 28 June 1491 at Greenwich; died 28 January 1547 at Whitehall Palace, London, was King of England from 1509 to 1547, Lord from 1509, and King of Ireland from 1541. The younger son of King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, he unexpectedly became heir to the throne after the sudden death of his elder brother Arthur in 1502 and ascended the English throne on 21 April 1509 at the age of seventeen as the second ruler of the House of Tudor.
