The Buccaneers were seafarers who are to be classified between privateers and pirates. The distinction is often made on the basis of the ownership of the ship. According to this distinction, privateers sailed on ships that belonged to their respective sovereigns, while buccaneers' ships were owned by governors (e.g. of Jamaica) and Aktionäre, while pirates themselves were masters of their ships.
