Robert Edward Lee (b. 19 January 1807 at Stratford-Hall Plantation, Virginia; Ä 12 October 1870 at Lexington, Virginia) was a colonel in the United States Army until 1861 and the most successful general of the Confederate Army. His most important command during the American Civil War (1861-1865) was the command of the Army of Northern Virginia. Finally, in January 1865, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Confederate Army. He established his fame with numerous victories, mostly by shifting the centre of gravity against outnumbered forces. After the Civil War, he worked for reconciliation between the warring parties and was president of what is now Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. Lee is still revered as a hero today, and not only in the Süd States. -Wikipedia-
