The focus is on the Battle of Bicoca in 1522, which is considered the first major victory of Emperor Charles V in the Italian theatre of war, which was bitterly contested between France and the Habsburgs. At the same time, this encounter, together with the battles of Marignano (1515) and Pavia (1525), marked the slow end of Swiss dominance in the mercenary field, which was now replaced by the German Landsknechts. This volume describes the background to the fighting in northern Italy, the composition of the French and imperial armies and, of course, the course of the campaign and the battle of Bicocca. The effects of the French defeat on the further course of the war are also discussed.
