After the disaster of Cannae in 216 BC, the Romans took quite a while to recover from the shock of the bloody defeat. A clear sign of the impending change in the fortunes of war was the conquest of Carthaginian possessions in Spain by the Romans. Of particular importance were the battles of Baecula and Ilipia, which are documented with their strategic backgrounds, their course and consequences. The forces at the disposal of the Romans and Carthaginians are also presented in detail.
