The weakness of the Moroccan state in the 19th century led to the intervention of European powers in the region. Along with Britain and France, Spain also interfered in the affairs of the North African country. A Spanish retaliatory action - Moroccan tribes had allegedly attacked the Spanish-held city of Ceuta - led to the Battle of Castillejos described here in 1860.
