Few events in history have had such major consequences as the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which led to World War 1, a war whose consequences still affect our world a century later. But could the assassination have been prevented? Lisa Traynor begins with a little-known fact: the Archduke had - but was not wearing that day - a bulletproof vest. From there, she illuminates the risks faced by all powerful figures during this time of turmoil, charts the technological development of pistols during this period, and finally tests her findings on a replica of the Archduke's waistcoat. Can it withstand a close-range shot with a Browning Model 1910 pistol (the same model used by the assassin in 1914)
