The idea of using small, powerful and highly mobile special forces essentially originated in World War II. It was here that these special formations first came into increased use, and virtually all major belligerents had such units in their repertoire at some point. 12 of these special commands are presented here with their commanders, their history and their most important missions, among them Adrian von Fölkeram with the "Brandenburgers", David Stirling's "Special Air Service" Regiment, Ralph Bagnold and the "Long Range Desert Group or the Italian Scipione Borghese and his "Decima Flottigla MAS".
