The author, co-owner of a respected Hamburg bank, shipping company and trading house, took over the chairmanship of the Hamburg Senate in February 1933 at the request of the Nazi Gauleiter Karl Kaufmann, without being a member of the NSDAP at the time. His memoirs of the years 1932 to 1939 are based on his daily dictated diaries.
As Governing Mayor of Hamburg,
as a delegation member of the World Economic Conference, as a political
advisor in economic matters directly connected with current events, he had dealings with the highest political representatives of the Third Reich, who took him into their confidence
because of his competence. His conversations, negotiations, encounters and experiences provided him with intimate insights and make his memoirs a contemporary historical source, especially in the areas of economic and trade policy, maritime shipping and shipbuilding ("KdF steamship"), foreign policy, administrative reform ("Groß-Hamburg-Gesetz") and construction. He was involved in the planning for the structural redesign of the Hanseatic city and in 1935 opened the park "Planten un Blomen", which still exists today. Objectively and soberly, he bears witness to a time in which he was active in a responsible position.
