Volume 1: The Army of the Electorate of Saxony in the Thirty Years' War. The author chooses a perspective that goes far beyond the reconstruction of the battlefield and the military aspects of the bloody struggle. Following the chronology and precisely fixing the respective position of the army, Roland Sennewald turns to a wealth of aspects that can be attributed to the economic, social and cultural history of the Thirty Years' War. He is interested in the structure and equipment of the troops as well as the organisation of military life. He is just as interested in the techniques of combat as in the innovations of armament. But also questions of everyday life, the logistical problems of maintaining such an army or the relations between the army and the population find his attention.
Along the chronological sequence, a picture of the fight of Electoral Saxon troops in this devastating war emerges with almost meticulous accuracy. The source material is extraordinarily wide-ranging. It ranges from surviving written documents and testimonies of contemporary witnesses to paintings and other forms of artistic engagement with the events.
In the final part of the book, the author goes into detail about the recruitment of troops, pay and rations, strategy and tactics, camps and transport, armament and artillery, as well as military justice during this period.
This richly illustrated volume therefore also claims to be the first to so comprehensively arrange a hardly manageable number of mosaic pieces on this war in Central Germany and to present them to the reader in a chronological sequence. A rich panorama of an exciting period of European history awaits its readers.
Ca. 200 colour illustrations. Large format (32 x 24 cm), thread bound, with ribbon bookmark and dust jacket.
688 pages.
Volume 2: The Electoral Saxon Insignia in the Thirty Years' War. There are few authentic sources for the myriad field insignia of the armies of the Great German War. Thanks to fortunate circumstances and foresight, unique original sources for field insignia exist for a not insignificant part of the Electorate of Saxony.
These are above all the field insignia that still exist today or their graphically recorded illustrations in the State Trophy Collection in Stockholm. Another source served as the basis for the present book. In the Saxon Main State Archives in Dresden, a "flag book" is kept, which shows several hundred watercolours of insignia of the Electoral Saxon units established in the years 1631-1635.
In addition, there are a few original individual pieces or original drawings from other historical sources or museums and collections.
The significance of the insignia, their handling, the sizes, the materials used, the content of the illustrations and inscriptions on them and the assignments to the units hereby form a completion of the volume on "The Electorate of Saxony's Army in the 30 Years' War".
Fully illustrated in colour, over 400 illustrations, large format (32 x 24 cm), thread bound, with ribbon bookmark and dust jacket. 192 pages.
