Although certainly not the largest naval battle in history, the battle between the U.S.S. Monitor and the C.S.S. Merrimack was nevertheless of considerable significance for the future of naval history. On 9 March 1862, during the American Civil War, two iron-clad warships clashed for the first time in the waters off Hampton Roads, Virginia. The Monitor also had a rotating, armoured turret. The author describes the course of the battle in detail and also discusses the naval innovations involved.
