Divers had brought almost 5.5 tonnes of gold to light from the British cruiser "Edinburgh", which had sunk during the Second World War. The valuable precious metal - once provided by the USSR in return for urgently needed war material - was to be transported by the "Edinburgh" from Murmansk to Great Britain. The project failed: first, U-456 torpedoed the cruiser, then German destroyers attacked the shipwrecked vessel. In the end, the ship had to be abandoned. The author describes in detail the last dramatic hours of the "Edinburgh", the unique salvage operation, the beginnings of convoy traffic, life in Murmansk and the battles on the polar front.
