In all details this division history shows the path of the German 198th Infantry Division from its formation in 1939 to the end of World War II in 1945. The 198th spent most of its existence on the Eastern Front, and there especially in the southern section, where it took part in operations in the Caucasus or the Crimea, among others. From the summer of 1944, the 198th Infantry Division was stationed in southern France. It surrendered to the Americans on German soil in May 1945.
