Description
King Konrad III (1138-1152), the first Hohenstaufen on the royal throne, was long regarded by historians as a hapless ruler who paled beside his successors. Today, judgement is more differentiated. Thus, the degree of integration of the political elites into the imperial service is regarded as an essential indicator of the effectiveness of high medieval kingship. This volume is devoted to the relationship between the ruler and the other political actors at his court. Advisers, partisans but also opponents of the king are portrayed, and the geographical core zones of the king's rule are dealt with. From this perspective, a more positive picture of Conrad III emerges, which makes him appear as more than a mere forerunner of Frederick Barbarossa.
