Description
For almost 350 years they were the elite troops of the Roman military and exerted enormous influence on the politics and rulers of Rome: The Praetorians. They possessed the power to proclaim emperors whose lives were in their hands, for the Praetorians sometimes decided the death of the one they were supposed to protect. From the beginnings under Emperor Augustus to the dissolution of the Praetorians by Constantine the Great, the author describes the development of the ancient guard and analyses the function of their commanders and their role in Roman politics.
The reader can expect exciting stories of intrigue at the imperial court accompanied by archaeological findings and ancient citations as material and literary witnesses. The visual material is captivating with hand-coloured reliefs that bring the Praetorians to life as the imperial bodyguard at the centre of power.
