Description
For the late Roman Republic, the period between 133 27 BC is marked above all by severe crises, ranging from the Gracchi to the Battle of Actium and finally ending with the Principate of Augustus. There are downright eruptions of violence within the Empire: Individual army leaders such as Marius, Sulla or Pompey acquire so much power that the internal cohesion of the Republic breaks down. The Roman Empire sinks into civil war. But at the same time, despite the internal and external conflicts, a growing prosperity can be observed, which leads to processes of social upheaval in the public and private spheres: to be seen in architecture, in production and in consumption. On the basis of buildings and images, but also rituals and acts of state, Dominik Maschek examines this late republican-Roman period of crisis and offers for the first time an overall cultural-historical interpretation.
