Description
A description of the development of small arms from their origin to modern times. While long-range weapons usually played only an opening or supporting role in armed conflicts, long-range combat gained in importance with the discovery of gunpowder and the invention of corresponding weapons. The growing influence of small arms changed warfare and the formation of armies; weapons such as the pike or the bow were displaced. In his history of small arms, the author traces the development from the earliest use of gunpowder to the battery lock and bayonet to pistols and rifles. An extensive section of illustrations supplements the text and makes the book a vivid document of weapons technology from its beginnings to the middle of the 19th century.
