Description
Volume 2 of the series "Fortress Research". Fortifications are constructed in a planned and extensive manner for special military use in times of peace and war. Recent research on fortifications has increasingly focused on these aspects. The fortifications are characterised by a characteristic social history with the simultaneous development of an ecosystem that shapes the settlement and landscape, which continues to develop after the demilitarisation of the fortification.
Under the guiding theme "Life in and with Fortresses", the contributions, apart from the fortress warfare, deal with such diverse aspects as conversion, vegetation in the past and present, rayon legislation, living situations, especially of women, in fortresses and current use of fortifications.
