In October 1943, Jack transferred from the Liberators to the Beaufighters after being selected for training at Torbeau in Scotland. He joined a Strike Wing at North Coates, attacking North Sea convoys off the coast of Holland. Later Jack and his Beaufighter were sent to the Far East where he was to fly from Assam over Burma in support of the 'forgotten army'. In the middle of the "tour" they were converted to Mosquitos, which he was not particularly happy about. After a short "break" during which the pilots were converted to Mosquitos, he was fortunate enough to take charge of a small unit that flew service personnel to various locations in southern India. Jack's enthusiasm for flying is undiminished and his happy coincidences are documented. His fascination with the cultural and social experiences he had in India leaves its mark when he talks about the privileges he enjoys - now as an officer - compared to the non-commissioned officers, and the difference in wealth between the Indian princes and the poor of India. This is not just about flying, but about how he and his comrades experienced these unique and special times.
