"War is a mere continuation of politics by other means" is the oft-quoted sentence by the philosopher and Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz from his book "On War" (1832). Clausewitz and his work were also discussed in the GDR, sometimes extremely controversially: The spectrum ranged from uncompromising rejection to wait-and-see tactics and even homage-filled adoration.
Andrée Türpe has been studying Clausewitz since the 1970s and draws a detailed picture of the place assigned to the Prussian military theorist in the GDR's historical image and at what point in time. Using source analyses, intensive literature research and interviews with contemporary witnesses, the various facets of Clausewitz's image in the political, military and journalistic reception in the GDR are developed.
