The idea of the "universal soldier", capable of making his own decisions on the battlefield, was born of General Sir John Moore Shorncliffe of Kent. This volume looks at the development of the Light Infantry from 1755 to the Iberian Peninsula War in 1808.
It takes into account the particularities of the theatres of war in Europe, North America and Asia (West Indies). In addition to a reprint of General John Moore's original manual for the Light Infantry, there are 46 short biographies of officers, a chronology on the Light Division and the British 60th Rifle Regiment, and on the origins of the famous 95th Rifle Regiment. Biographies of the commanders of the 95th Rifle Regiment, reprint of the regimental regulations, and remarks on the "Baker" rifle.
