Born in 1775, Müffling joined the Prussian army as early as 1788. In 1804 he was transferred to the general staff. He served on the staff in 1805 and in Blücher's headquarters from 1813. He gained particular notoriety for his role as Prussian liaison officer at Wellington's headquarters in 1815.
