Born the son of an imperial knight, Karl Mack (17521828), ennobled as Baron von Leiberich, rose to the highest ranks of the Austrian army through diligence, luck and patronage. In the War of the Third Coalition against France, Mack served as the de facto commander-in-chief of the Austrian army in Germany. Forced to surrender by Napoleon in Ulm on 20 October 1805, Mack was sentenced to imprisonment in a fortress and demoted in the subsequent court martial. After his release from prison, he spent the last two decades of his life in St. Pölten, stubbornly pursuing his rehabilitation. An act of clemency by the emperor granted him reinstatement to his rank in 1819.
