This commemorative work on the American Civil War contains carefully selected excerpts from the memoirs of the most important participants in the war. The two authors combine the memories of the protagonists, who are both Northerners and Southerners, with their own comments on the course of the war. This gives the reader both the personal views of contemporary witnesses on the events of the war and the analytical and well-founded descriptions of the historians. Contributors include Union generals Ulysses S. Grant, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, William T. Sherman, Abner Doubleday, and Philip Sheridan. The Confederate side is represented by Robert E. Lee, General James Longstreet, Cpl. Sam Watkins, Lt. John W. Worsham, Colonel Edward Porter Alexander, Captain John Wilkinson, and Jefferson Davis. Excerpts from diaries and letters written by ordinary Union and Confederate soldiers give an impression of how they experienced everyday life during the war and the deadly drama of the skirmishes and battles.
