From Mömpelgard to St. Petersburg. When Sophie Dorothea von Württemberg (1759-1828) married Catherine the Great's only son at the age of barely 17 and was given the name Maria Fyodorovna, she could not have known that a life full of strokes of fate lay ahead of her.
Five of her ten children died before her. Emperor Paul I, her husband, was assassinated in 1801; she never got over his death. Her son Alexander waged war against Napoleon I for years, her son Nicholas began his reign by suppressing an uprising, and her daughters, whom she had married off to European princes, were not always happy abroad. Knowledgeable and empathetic, Marianna Butenschön tells how the Württemberg princess "Dortel" became one of the most important rulers of the House of Romanov. The author skilfully interweaves Maria's personal fate with the dramatic political events of her time
