The "Lion of the North", King Gustav Adolf of Sweden, played a decisive role in the Thirty Years' War. In 1630, Gustav Adolf, the last Protestant victor, defeated the Catholics at Breitenfeld in a devastating battle that was widely regarded as the fulfilment of a prophecy predicting the defeat of the eagle (the symbol of the German emperor) by a golden lion. Gustav Adolf was killed in battle at Lützen just two years later. However, his fame, which he earned with technical and tactical innovations, remained. The first part of this volume deals with the equipment, uniforms and organisation of the infantry. The second part deals with the cavalry, which played a decisive role in Gustav Adolf's success.
