With 11 classes and hundreds of units whose tasks ranged from nuclear strikes against NATO ships to air defense and anti-submarine warfare, the Soviet Union's destroyers were among the most numerous and important units of the surface fleet. After Soviet shipbuilding overcame its severe postwar problems, the traditional destroyers of the early Cold War years were replaced over the decades by increasingly powerful guided missile ships. Unlike their NATO counterparts, however, the details of these warships are virtually unknown in the West. In this book, Jan Radziemski, naval historian and expert on the Soviet Navy, presents the first history in English of the fleet's destroyers during the Cold War, concisely assessing the development and construction of each class, their tasks, technology, armament, sensors, and seaworthiness. He also draws on his extensive photo collection and presents more than 600 photos illustrating all classes and subclasses from Project 30 to the latest Sovremenny class. With data tables on the destroyer classes, individual ships, and armament capabilities, this is a guide to the mainstays of the Soviet fleet during the Cold War.
