Description
The U-1105. also known as "Black Panther," was the only submarine of Admiral Karl Dönitz´s once feared German U-Boat fleet to conduct a wartime patrol equipped with powerful late-war technical innovations These key developments included an airmast (snorkel), allowing it to regain air and charge batteries without ever having to surface; a revolutionary sonar array that gave it a marked advantage in detecting Allied vessels while submerged; and a rubberized acoustic camouflage known as "Alberich" that significantly reduced its own sonar signature. After the end of World War II, the U-1105 was the single most tested U-Boat by the Western Allies and the last U-Boat to sail acros the North Atlantic under its own power during the winter of 1945-46. Resting in the nmud of the lower Potomac River, some 60 miles south-east of Washington, DC, the U-1105 complete history has remained obscured beheind the the veil of time, despite its "redicovery" in the 1980s. Now, after half a decade of archival research, this u-Boat´s rich postwar history has been fully documented. This book provides technical detail on each of its late-war innovations and a full-color underwater guide to all the key features of the wreck site.
