In the late 1930s, the US Navy created a class of small, light cruisers designed to serve as versatile destroyers. The "Atlantas" could provide air defence support, direct and launch torpedo attacks, serve as anti-submarine defences and outperform other light warships in surface combat. The reality of war was different. In every surface battle, they had to go up against larger cruisers (or even battleships) rather than the destroyers they were supposed to be fighting. In this book, naval historian Mark Lardas explains that despite their weaknesses, they proved to be one of the US Navy's most useful warships: With a main battery of 16 5-inch guns, they proved to be excellent anti-aircraft cruisers. From the Battle of Midway onwards, they protected the Navy's most valuable ships - its aircraft carriers - so effectively that later "Atlantas" were built in modified form as special anti-aircraft defence ships. The Navy even ordered a successor class after the war and considered building a "Super-Atlanta" armed only with heavy anti-aircraft guns. This richly illustrated book deals with the history, development and modifications of these unusual warships and their influence on the Pacific War.
