The Junkers Ju 88A was the Luftwaffe's most effective medium bomber during much of the Second World War. Its high speed and surprising manoeuvrability made it an ideal candidate for conversion to a destroyer hunter. Originally designed as a long-range bomber escort, the Ju 88C, with its solid nose, was equipped with powerful cannons that made the aircraft ideal for use as a night fighter. Thanks to its unrivalled endurance, the Ju 88C was also able to search the Bay of Biscay from the French Atlantic coast for Allied maritime reconnaissance aircraft hunting U-boats. Air force historian Chris Goss traces the eventful operational history of the Ju 88C using eyewitness accounts and combat reports from the crews who flew the twin-engine destroyer in action. Newly commissioned profile drawings and more than 50 photos of aircraft and crews document in detail the conversion of the aircraft from a fast bomber to a deadly heavy fighter that proved to be the scourge of Allied bombers and patrol aircraft.
