This richly illustrated and vividly written study examines the forces that fought for New France alongside Montcalm during the struggle for Canada (17541763). In the conflict known as the French and Indian War, the defenders of New France were led by the capable and determined Louis-Joseph de Montcalm; his initial engagements against the British and their allies between 1756 and 1758 culminated in the decisive Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759. In this work, Robbie MacNiven explores the various military units that served under Montcalms command in Canadaa pivotal era in the country's history. Montcalms forces comprised newly arrived regular French army units, locally recruited militias, and seasoned French colonial infantry, all operating in cooperation with various First Nations peoples hostile to the British. The author examines every component of these diverse forces, drawing on the latest research as well as insights gained from the battlefields and garrisons of 18th-century Canada.
