The introduction of the Fw 190 in late summer 1941 represented a quantum leap for the Luftwaffe in its ability to counter the RAF on the Channel front. Originally designed as a pure fighter, the type soon demonstrated its potential as a fighter-bomber (Jabo), and its operational role matured from the provisional missions of the early days to highly effective hit-and-run coastal attacks. This progress was supported both by frequent improvements by Focke-Wulf and by the development of sub-types designed specifically for air-to-ground missions, which enabled the Fw 190 to carry useful ammunition loads and protect itself in encounters with British interceptors. In this study, Luftwaffe historian Malcolm V. Lowe traces the eventful history of the Fw 190 Jabo fleet on the Channel front. The text follows the aircraft from its beginnings through its successful attacks on important targets on the south coast of England to the battles during the D-Day invasion, supplementing the accounts of Luftwaffe pilots and their RAF opponents with photos from private archives and 24 specially commissioned profile drawings.
