Although the US Army had successfully secured both Utah Beach and Omaha Beach on D-Day, the next tactical challenge was to link the two beachheads. Utah and Omaha were separated by the mouth of the Vire River. Carentan was the first major town on the river and therefore of crucial tactical importance. This did not escape the Germans' notice, however, and they deployed their elite 6th Parachute Regiment to defend the town. On the US side, the task of capturing Carentan fell to the 101st Airborne Division, and in the week following D-Day, US and German troops engaged in a fierce battle for Carentan. Historian Steven J. Zaloga provides a detailed analysis of the initial battle, which took place from June 10 to 12, 1944, the German counterattack, and the eventual Allied victory. With illustrations, detailed maps, eyewitness accounts and historical photographs, this study brings to life the fierce battles of the paratroopers and shows how this Allied success ushered in the next phase of Operation Overlord.
