In April 1898, the United States and Spain declared war on each other. Under the leadership of Commodore George Dewey, the small US Asiatic squadron left China and attacked the Spanish naval squadron defending Manila Bay on 1 May. At the same time, a Filipino insurgency led by a charismatic young native named Aguinaldo liberated most of the Philippines on its own and laid siege to Manila. This resulted in three hostile sides fighting for supremacy, each fixated on their own political goals. Here, author Brian Lane Herder examines why the US campaign in the Philippines in 1898 permanently changed US foreign policy and emphasises the importance of the Filipino rebels in defeating the Spanish. Illustrated with battle scenes, photographs and informative maps and diagrams, this work covers the naval battle of 1 May between the US and Spanish cruiser squadrons, the land campaign in the Philippines from May to August, the conquest of Guam and the annexation of Hawaii. The resulting work is one of the first to cover the entire Pacific theatre of the Spanish-American War, including military and diplomatic developments.
