After the battles at Anzio and Cassino in 1944, the Allies pursued the Germans, who had managed to escape when the Americans took Rome. As experienced troops were withdrawn from Italy to take part in the invasions of Normandy and southern France, the number of Allies dwindled, and could only be partially replaced by three divisions. The Allies pressed on, following the Germans into central Italy to prevent them from reaching the Gothic Line. In battles around Rome, Pisa, Livorno, Lake Trasimeno, Ancona and Florence, the Allies continued to advance. Troops from the United States, Britain, France, New Zealand, South Africa, Poland and India fought in these campaigns, pursuing the Germans as they retreated to safe areas. With detailed maps, diagrams and historical images, Italian historian Pier Paolo Battistelli describes the situation during this final advance from Rome, shows the highly motorised fighting in several cities in central Italy and explains why this was a tactical failure on the part of the Allies.
