An introduction to the cultural symbolism of armour in the Italian Renaissance. The first chapter describes the changes and significance of visual and symbolic decoration in general. The second chapter uses specific examples of Guidobaldo II della Rovere (1514-1574), Emperor Charles V (1500-1558) and Cosimo I de Medici (1519-1574) to further explain the symbolic pictorial programme of armour.
