The coloured circular view by the Nuremberg letter painter Niclas Meldeman depicting the first siege of Vienna by the Ottomans in 1529 is one of the Wien Museum's cimelia. Sponsored by the Nuremberg City Council, Meldeman was able to produce a panorama consisting of six woodcuts in just a few months, which is both an image of the event and a commentary on contemporary events.
This commercial product was quickly widely disseminated, but can now only be found in three complete copies, one fragmentary copy and several lost but verifiable copies. The interdisciplinary conference volume explores the source value of the pictorial work, places it in the context of contemporary cartography and critically questions the significance of Vienna for the Ottomans.
