This strictly chronologically ordered book of photographs takes the reader through each year of World War I and to all the major theatres of the conflict. It shows the development of weapons technology between 1914 and 1918, documents the everyday life of soldiers at the fronts, describes the war at sea and in the air, and explains the influence of the front on the lives of civilians in the home countries and the role of the armaments industries in the various warring countries. In addition to the pictures themselves and the accompanying captions, short chapter introductions explain the main political and military events and provide the background, so to speak, for the numerous photographs.
