In December 1813 William Gavin took part with the British 71st Highland Regiment in a supporting expedition for the Dutch in their fight against the French. On 8 March an attempt was made to storm Bergen op Zoom. The attempt failed, the regimental commander of the 71st Regiment, Colonel Carleton fell. William Gavin is an important eyewitness to this little-known enterprise of the Napoleonic Wars.
