Using many accounts from American veterans, the author tells the story of the American air raid on Tokyo on 9/10 March 1945 from the perspective of the bomber crews. Known as Operation Meetinghouse, the air campaign unleashed a devastating firestorm in the Japanese capital that is estimated to have killed more than 9,90000 people.
In addition to a direct account of the attack operation, this work also provides an overview of the development of the strategic bombing war against Japan from the famous "Doolittle" attack on Tokyo in 1942, a quasi-revenge for Pearl Harbor, to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.
