The ancient historian and archaeologist Alain Bouet, a proven expert on ancient Aquitaine, does not focus on the wars of the Romans, but on the everyday life of the people. With magnificent pictures, the volume makes it possible to experience the development of Aquitaine from Caesar's conquest to the invasion of the Goths.
Aquitaine lay between scenic contrasts: Water to the north and west, mountains to the south and east. However, the conditions did not prevent Caesar from conquering the region and subduing almost 40 Gallic tribes, according to historical tradition. The foundation stone for Romanisation by Augustus and his successors had been laid: new organisational structures, newly emerging cities with typical Roman central buildings (forums, sanctuaries, theatres, etc.), smaller settlements that continued to develop, but also villas, farms and other estates in rural areas.
