The diary of German soldier Hans Roth chronologically and in great detail describes this man's experiences of the fierce fighting on the Eastern Front between 12 June 1941 and 12 March 1943. Roth was serving with a Panzerjäger battalion of the 299th Infantry Division, part of Walther Reichenau's 6th Army, when Operation Barbarossa began. He describes the great and successful Kessel battles of the summer of 1941 as well as the massacre of Babi Yar near Kiev, which he himself observed, or the German summer offensive of 1942 with its dramatic climax at Stalingrad.
