This is a detailed account of the German campaign in the Caucasus region of southern Russia in 194243. The objective of this major offensive was to capture the strategically vital oil fields of Baku in order to supply the fuel-starved Wehrmacht with petroleum products. Although initially successful, the offensive ended in a desperate retreat that nearly resulted in the encirclement of an entire army groupa disaster that surpassed even Stalingrad.
