The fierce naval battles of the First World Warlargely forgotten by the publichave left few traces. Yet, the deployment of submarines foreshadowed the massive Atlantic convoy battles of the Second World War. In May 1944, twenty-six German submarines belonging to the so-called *Landwirt* group attempted to penetrate the English Channel to disrupt the numerous Allied convoys supplying the Normandy front during the summer of 1944. Sailing from French and Norwegian ports, they encountered formidable naval and aerial defenses. British Coastal Command aircraft covered a vast area stretching from western England to the Bay of Biscay. Groups of fast destroyers joined the aircraft to form "Operation Cork"; they tracked down German submarines in shallow waters and hunted them, preventing them from making life-saving dives. This episode of the German submarine war is rarely mentioned in connection with Operation Neptune.
