The book tells the true story of Operation Herrick in Afghanistan, unvarnished, not from the perspective of generals or politicians, but from the perspective of ordinary infantrymen. The book is full of details that only such a source can provide: "I looked at Scotty McGregor, my little machine gunner. He was only five feet tall, and when he put the butt of the 7.62 mm machine gun on the ground, the gun was almost as tall as he was. In his patrol rucksack, he had eight hundred rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition and a spare barrel. I had chosen him as a gimpy gunner because he was the best man for the job. He didn't get carried away with his shots and was always aware of his fire, so he never came close to running out of ammunition. Courage, loyalty to each other, self-sacrifice. Was it all worth it? That remains to be seen but whatever the answer, the sacrifice should never be forgotten.
