OFLAG XVII A Edelbach for French officers at the Allentsteig military training area is probably the best documented prisoner-of-war camp of the Second World War in terms of texts, images and archaeological research. The prisoners secretly shot the only authentic film (Sous le manteau) about life in a prisoner-of-war camp and established a camp university. With 132 escapees, it was also the most extensive escape from an internment camp. The rich sources provide insights into the (self-)organisation and general conditions (supplies, everyday life, guarding, etc.) of an officers' camp. The eyewitness accounts of the evacuation and the evacuation marches through the Waldviertel, South Bohemia and the Mühlviertel provide completely new insights into the chaos at the end of the war.
