The Battle of Agnadello, fought on May 14, 1509, in the Ghiara d'Adda region of Lombardy, is considered one of the most famous battles of the Italian Wars and of early modern Europe. In a single afternoon of fierce fighting along the Adda River and across the fields of the Ghiara dAdda plain, the French army under King Louis XII destroyed the rearguard of the Venetian forces commanded by the *condottiero* Bartolomeo dAlviano, inflicting catastrophic losses on one of the Italian peninsula's most formidable armies. Within weeks of the battle, the Republic of Venicewhich had spent over a century building a mainland empire across northeastern and north-central Italylost virtually all its continental territories to the advancing armies of the League of Cambrai.
