This book examines how combat power was generated and sustained during the Second World War. At the center of this analysis stands the 4th Independent Armoured Brigadeone of the relatively few British formations deployed across multiple theaters of war over the course of the conflict. The book posits that the Brigades extensive operational reach was largely predicated on its ability to build and consistently maintain a high level of combat power. To explore this, the study analyzes three key areas at the tactical level of the British Army between 1943 and 1945: leadership, morale, and organizational learning. Drawing on extensive archival researchincluding previously unpublished documentsas well as interviews with eyewitnesses, "Tanks in Unexpected Places" reconstructs the history, role, and organizational culture of the 4th Armoured Brigade. In doing so, the work addresses crucial questions: Why was this Brigade repeatedly entrusted with the most arduous tasks, and how did it produce three future Chiefs of the General Staff? The book is aimed at historians, military experts, and anyone interested in the British Army during the Second World War.
